My
Landscape PROSPECTUS for BUCOLIC POEMS from the Idylls of Theocritus
For our 12th publication available in the summer of 2025, we have selected 8 bucolic poems from the Idylls of Theocritus. The translation is by the English poet Robert Wells. Theocritus is considered to be the inventor of the pastoral tradition, and as our first publication was Virgil’s Eclogues, after all these years, I felt drawn to return to this theme. This time the pastoral illustrations are based on works that I have done over the past several years in a part of northern Ontario very dear to me. The ruggedness of the land, with its unusual clarity of light, is similar to the experience of drawing and painting on both the island of Crete and in the south of France. The challenge was to take this northern imagery and adapt it to a southern landscape. There is a pochoir for each of the 8 poems and one for the title page and colophon. These are complex and generally evoke the mood of the poetry. The 8 woodcuts are more specific depicting an image from each poem. The book has 75 pages including blanks. The page size is 14 1/2 inches in height and 10 1/2 inches in width or 36.8 by 26.6 mm. The type is 16 point Bembo printed on 200 gsm Arches Cover. The woodcuts are printed on Oguni Fudagami. The book was jointly conceived by Butler and Bachinski. The pochoirs were designed and printed by Bachinski. The woodcuts were made by Bachinski. Both the woodcuts and the printing were done on a Vandercook Universal1 by Butler with Bachinski assisting. The binding by Butler is quarter bound in cloth and Kizuki Somegami Red paper with a linocut on the cover. The book is housed in a cloth covered slipcase. We have printed 30 copies for sale and the price is $3,250.00 USD wbachinski1@gmail.com www.shantybaypress.com
